आज समस्त विश्व के लिए एक सबसे बड़ी समस्या है लोग नदियों, झीलों, महासागरों और भूजल को लगातार प्रदूषित कर रहे हैं, फिर चाहे वो औद्योगिक कारखाने हों, प्रत्यक्ष या अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से कूड़े कचरे या अपशिष्ट जल का सीधे नदियों में बिना ट्रीटमेंट किये अपशिष्ट पदार्थ हो छोड़ रहे हैं, जिससे बड़े पैमाने पर प्रदूषण होता है।
जल से जुड़ा है आज व कल
है ये वरदायनी अमृत है पानी
बिना जल के नहीं है जीवन
हो पौधे पत्ते जीव या प्राणी
बह रहा है नदियों का पानी
सुखद भविष्य लिए सृष्टि का
आज गहराया है संकट इन पर
नाम ओ निशान नहीं वृष्टि का
कूड़ा कचरा फेंक नदियों में
दूषित मैला ज़हर बना डाला
अपने स्वार्थ की खातिर हमने
कारखाना व शहर बना डाला
कूड़ा कूड़ेदान में फेंके हम
हरगिज़ ना फेंको इधर उधर
नहीं बुराई कोई इसमें भाई
दिखेगा सुन्दर गांव और शहर
कभी नहीं होंगी नदियां मैली
बाढ़ आने से न घर-बार डूबेंगे
अपने क्या पराये क्या फिर
ना बच्चे माँ बाप से बिछड़ेंगे
प्लास्टिक और कचरे जहरीले
न फेंको नदियों के किनारे
अपने कर्तव्य से मुँह न मोड़ें
ये लौट आएंगे पास तुम्हारे
स्वच्छ निर्मल साफ़ पानी हैं

इस बात से बिलकुल भी इन्कार नहीं किया जा सकता है कि- जल प्रदूषण से केवल पर्यावरण ही प्रभावित होता है ऐसा नहीं है, यह मानव स्वास्थ्य के लिए भी बेहद गंभीर समस्या है, प्रदूषित पीने के पानी से कई स्वास्थ्य समस्याएँ हो सकती हैं, जैसे आंतों के रोग, प्रजनन संबंधी मुद्दे और तंत्रिका विकार। जल जनित रोगाणु, जैसे बैक्टीरिया और वायरस, गंभीर बीमारियों का कारण बन सकते हैं, विशेष रूप से बच्चों और बुजुर्गों में। केवल इतना ही नहीं प्रदूषित जल से लंबे समय तक संपर्क गंभीर स्थितियों का कारण बन सकता है, जैसे कैंसर और विकासात्मक विकार। ये समस्या यहीं तक नहीं रुकी है, जल प्रदूषण का गंभीर परिणाम जलीय जीव जंतु जैसे- मछली, मगरमच्छ और भी कई अन्य जीव भी भुगत रहे हैं।
जल प्रदूषण के कारण सामाजिक व आर्थिक दुष्परिणाम भी हो रहे हैं। सामान्य जन-जीवन प्रदूषित जल, सुरक्षित पीने के पानी की उपलब्धता को कम कर देता है, जिससे नगरपालिकाओं व बड़े बड़े शहरों में बीमारियों के बढ़ने से उपचार की लागत बढ़ जाती है। मछली पकड़ने के उद्योग धंधे भी प्रभावित होते है, जिससे आजीविका और खाद्य सुरक्षा को खतरा होता है। पर्यटन उद्योग पर बुरा असर पड़ता है क्यूंकि जिन शहरों में जल प्रदूषित होते हैं, वहां के लोग प्रदूषित समुद्र तटों और मनोरंजन क्षेत्रों से बचते हैं।
जल प्रदूषण एक जटिल चुनौती है जो विश्वभर में पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र, मानव स्वास्थ्य और अर्थव्यवस्था को प्रभावित करती है। इसके कारणों और प्रभावों को समझकर, हम भविष्य की पीढ़ियों के लिए हमारे कीमती जल संसाधनों की सुरक्षा के लिए महत्वपूर्ण कदम उठाए जा सकते हैं। सिर्फ सरकारों, उद्योगों और समुदायों को दोषी ठहराना कहाँ तक उचित है, आज कई संस्थाएं इस विषय को लेकर जागरूक हुए हैं और लगातार दूसरों को भी इस काम में आगे आने के लिए प्रेरित कर रहे हैं, ताकि एक बेहतर कल का निर्माण हो सके।
अब सोचने वाली बात ये है कि मात्र जल के प्रदूषित होने से कितनी चीजें जुड़ी हुई हैं, जिसका हमारे ऊपर कितना गहरा प्रभाव पड़ता है, बेहतर यही होगा कि हम सभी को इसके ऊपर विचार करना होगा।
