समुद्र मंथन। Samudra Manthan। Mahakumbh 2025। महाकुम्भ। आख़िर 14 रत्नों में क्या निकला
आज हर तरफ़ भारत देश के उत्तर प्रदेश राज्य में स्थित प्रयागराज में 13 जनवरी 2025 से शुरू होने वाले महाकुम्भ की चर्चा देश विदेश में रहने वाले हर व्यक्ति की जुबान पर है। जहाँ देश ही नहीं विदेशों से भी प्रभु प्रेमी एवं श्रद्धालु पहुँच कर त्रिवेणी संगम पर आस्था साधना विश्वास से युक्त होकर डुबकी लगाते हैं और अपनी आत्मा को शुद्ध करते हैं।
लेकिन क्या आप जानते हैं कि महाकुम्भ या कुम्भ को मनाने के पीछे का सबसे बड़ा कारण क्या है? धार्मिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार समुद्र मंथन के माध्यम से (14) चौदह रत्नों की प्राप्ति हुई थी, जिसमें चौदहवां रत्न अमृत कलश था, जिसे स्वयं भगवान धनवंतरी ले कर प्रकट हुए थे, जिसे प्राप्त करने के लिए देवता और दानवों में झगड़ा हो गया था। जयंत, देवराज इन्द्र का पुत्र इस कलश को ले कर भागने लगा, जिसके पीछे देवता और दानव भी भागे, भागते समय इस अमृत की कुछ बूंदें भारत देश के अलग अलग स्थानों पर आ कर गिरा था, जो वर्तमान में प्रयागराज, उज्जैन, हरिद्वार और नासिक हैं। ऐसी ही मान्यता है कि इन स्थानों पर नदियों का जल बहुत पवित्र हो जाता है, जो हर प्रकार से व्यक्ति को आनन्द देता है और भक्ति की धाराओं में सुकून देता है। तभी से कुम्भ और महाकुम्भ में लोग आ कर पवित्र जल में स्नान कर अपने आपको पवित्र करते हैं।
आइए जानते हैं कुम्भ को मनाने के कारणों में समुद्र मंथन की क्या भूमिका रही।
समुद्र मंथन
एक बार की बात है देवताओं ने भगवान विष्णु और भगवान ब्रह्मा जी से कहा समुद्र में असंख्य रत्न मौजूद हैं यदि इसे मथा जाए, जैसे मक्खन के लिए दही को मथते हैं वैसे ही, इस समुद्र से भी दिव्य और अलौकिक रत्न निकलेंगे। देवताओं का ये विचार सचमुच विचारणीय था इसलिए देवताओं ने सोचा कि ये काम इतना आसान नहीं है और अकेले इस कार्य को कर पाना असंभव है, इसलिए इस कार्य में असुरों की भी सहायता की आवश्यकता होगी, यही विचार करके देवता असुरों से सहायता मांगने गए, असुर मान भी गए। तत्पश्चात देवताओं और असुरों ने मिलकर समुद्र मंथन किया। इसके लिए मंदरांचल पर्वत को मथानी के रूप में प्रयोग किया गया तथा इस मथानी को घुमाने के लिए नागराज वासुकी को रस्सी की तरह प्रयोग किया गया। जब सारी व्यवस्था हो गई, मंदरांचल पर्वत के आस-पास नागराज वासुकी को लपेट दिया गया, अचानक देवताओं को यह ख़्याल आया और उन्होंने आपस में अपने अन्य साथियों से कहा, “मंथन के समय नागराज वासुकी का बदन मंदरांचल पर्वत से रगड़ खायेगा। इससे वासुकी नाग अवश्य ही क्रोधित हो उठेगा। इस क्रोध में वो जिसे भी अपने सामने उपस्थित पाएगा वो उसे कटेगा ज़रूर।
अपने साथी की इस बात से सभी देवताओं ने कोई उपाय निकालने की सोची जिससे काम भी बन जाए और कोई हानि भी ना हो। काफी सोच-विचार के बाद सभी देवता इस निष्कर्ष पर पहुँचे, यदि असुर वासुकी के मुँह की ओर रहें तथा देवता उसकी पूंछ की ओर तो बड़ी सरलता से हम यह कार्य संपन्न कर पाएंगे। लेकिन अब बड़ी समस्या यह थी कि असुरों को नागराज वासुकी की मुँह की तरफ का हिस्सा पकड़ने के लिए तैयार कैसे किया जाए?
देवगुरु बृहस्पति ने देवताओं को समझाते हुए कहा, “यदि हम असुरों से इस विषय में कोई भी बातचीत करेंगे तो वे अवश्य हम देवताओं को ही वासुकी का मुँह पकड़ने के लिए विवश कर देंगे। यह समस्या का हल हमें बातचीत से नहीं, बल्कि नीति से हल करनी होगी।”
गुरुदेव बृहस्पति की बातें सुनकर सभी देवता अब उत्साहपूर्वक उनकी ही ओर देखने लगे। तत्पश्चात देवराज इन्द्र ने विनयपूर्वक कहा, “गुरुदेव, अब आप ही कोई उपाय बताएं और हमें इस दुविधा से बाहर निकालें।”
देवगुरु बृहस्पति ने कहा, हे देवराज “असुर” बहुत अभिमानी और मायावी भी हैं। अभिमानी व्यक्ति बुद्धि का प्रयोग नहीं कर पाता। कोई भी निर्णय लेते समय अभिमानी व्यक्ति उसके तर्कसंगत होने का इतना महत्व नहीं देता जितना अपने अहम् की तुष्टि को देता है। तो हमें असुरों की इस कमजोरी का लाभ उठाना चाहिए।” एक पल रूककर गुरुदेव आगे बोले, “तुम सभी भागकर नागराज वासुकी को मुँह की ओर से पकड़ लो। अभिमानी असुर अवश्य हमारी नकल करेंगे। बस, हमारा काम बन जाएगा।”
देवताओं ने गुरुदेव बृहस्पति के आदेश का पालन किया। सभी जाकर वासुकी नाग के मुँह की ओर खड़े हो गए। जब असुरों ने देवताओं को अपने आप नागराज वासुकी के मुँह की ओर खड़े होते देखा तो वे शंकित हो उठे। उन्होंने कहा इसमें देवताओं की अवश्य कोई चाल है अन्यथा ये देवता वासुकी नाग के मुँह की ओर खड़े नहीं होते।
असुरराज अचानक से आगे बढ़ा और देवराज इन्द्र से बोला, “हम लोगों से बात किए बिना तुम लोग वासुकी के मुँह की ओर कैसे खड़े हो गए हो? यह निर्णय तो हम सबने मिलकर लेना है कि सर्पराज को मुँह की ओर से कौन पकड़ेगा तथा पूंछ की ओर से कौन?”
असुरराज की इस बात पर देवराज इन्द्र बोला, “इसमें सोचना क्या है? हम लोग देवता हैं। सभी लोग हमारा आदर करते हैं, लोग हमारी पूजा अर्चना करते हैं। समाज में हमारा अति विशिष्ट स्थान है। हम वासुकी नाग को पूंछ की ओर से कैसे पकड़ सकते हैं? ये हमें बिल्कुल भी स्वीकार नहीं है, हम कुलीन लोग हैं नागराज को मुँह की ओर से ही पकड़ेंगे, तुम लोग वासुकी नाग को पूंछ की ओर से पकड़ोगे।” तुम लोग मना नहीं कर सकते, समद्र मंथन से जो कुछ भी निकलेगा वो आधा आधा बाँट लेंगे, किन्तु तुम लोग हमारी बराबरी नहीं कर सकते।
देवराज इन्द्र के इस उत्तर से अभिमानी असुरराज तिलमिला उठा। वह अभिमान में भरकर बोला,
“तुम्हें अपने देवता होने का अभिमान है तो हमें भी अपने असुर होने पर गर्व है। हम शक्ति और पराक्रम में तुम लोगों से किसी प्रकार भी कम नहीं हैं। हम अनेकों बार युद्ध में तुम्हारे दांत खट्टे कर चुके हैं। हम तुम्हारे दबाव में आने वाले नहीं। वासुकी के मुँह की ओर हम असुर रहेंगे। तुम्हें वासुकी नाग के पूंछ की ओर से पकड़ना होगा।”
देवराज इन्द्र ने जोश में भरकर कहा, “यह असम्भव है। हम देवता वासुकी को मुँह की ओर से ही पकड़ेंगे, पूंछ की ओर से तुम्हें ही पकड़ना पड़ेगा। पूंछ की ओर खड़े होकर हम अपना अपमान नहीं करवा सकते ।”
असुरराज ने और भी क्रोधित स्वर कहा, “तुम्हारा अपमान हो या सम्मान, हम असुरों को इस बात से कोई मतलब नहीं। यदि करना चाहते हो तो तुम्हें हमारी बात माननी ही पड़ेगी। हम वासुकी को मुँह मुँह की ओर से पकड़ेंगे, और पूंछ की ओर से देवता पकड़ेंगे।”
देवराज इन्द्र के बोलने से पहले ही देवगुरु बृहस्पति ने बीच-बचाव करते हुआ विनम्र भाव से कहा, “देवराज इन्द्र, यह समय सम्मान या अपमान पर लड़ कर को नीचा दिखाने का नहीं है और ना ही किसी बात पर अड़ने का है। यदि हम सभी लोग ऐसे ही अपने अपने मान सम्मान में अड़े रहे तो ये कार्य कदापि सफलतापूर्वक संपन्न नहीं हो पायेगा। इसलिए हमें वह काम करना चाहिए जिससे सबका भला हो। इसी में हम सबका सम्मान है।” अब यदि असुर वासुकी के मुख की ओर खड़े रहना चाहते हैं तो आपको क्या आपत्ति है, आप पूँछ की तरफ खड़े हो जाएं, पहले ये कार्य संपन्न हो जाये, तत्पश्चात आप लाभ और हानि के विषय में सोचियेगा।
फिर देवगुरु बृहस्पति ने असुरराज से कहा, “असुरराज, हम वासुकी को पूंछ की ओर से पकड़कर मंथन करने के लिए तैयार हैं। आप असुर ही वासुकी को मुँह की ओर से पकड़ें, हम सभी देवताओं को इसमें कोई आपत्ति नहीं है। हम देवता कार्य को सफलतापूर्वक समाप्त करना चाहते हैं अब हम कोई अन्य विघ्न डालना नहीं चाहते, अब आप सभी शीघ्रता करें ताकि ये कार्य आरम्भ किया जा सके।”
असुरराज बेहद उत्साहित थे कि हम असुरों ने देवताओं की चाल सफल होने नहीं दी, अपनी बात उनसे मनवाँ ली। असुरों ने ख़ुशी ख़ुशी वासुकी को मुँह की ओर से पकड़ लिया तथा देवताओं ने पूंछ की ओर से, और मंथन आरम्भ हो गया। जैसे-जैसे मन्द्राचल पर्वत की मथानी तेजी से घूमने लगी, वैसे-वैसे नागराज वासुकी के शरीर में पीड़ा सी उठने लगी। क्रोधित होकर नागराज फुफकारने लगे तथा क्रोधित हो कर उसने कई असुरों को डस भी लिया। उसकी फुफकार से निकलने वाली विषैली वायु के प्रभाव से कई असुर मूर्छित हो गए। इसके विपरीत देवता बिना किसी हानि के यह कार्य सम्पन्न कर पाए।
इस कहानी से हमें यह शिक्षा मिलती है कि अभिमानी व्यक्ति की ऐसी ही दुर्गति होती है। यदि असुर व्यर्थ का अभिमान न करते और सारी बात को विवेकपूर्वक विचारते तो उन्हें हानि न उठानी पड़ती।
हाँ एक और महत्वपूर्ण बात इसमें जोड़नी रह गई और वो ये कि मंदराचल पर्वत समुद्र में बार बार फिसल रहा था जिसे सँभालने स्वयं भगवान विष्णु जी ने कच्छप अर्थात कछुए का अवतार लिया था और अपनी पीठ पर मंदराचल पर्वत को समुद्र की भयंकर लहरों में संभाल रखा था तब जा कर समुद्र मंथन संपन्न हुआ।
इस मंथन से 14 (चौदह) रत्न निकले थे जो इस प्रकार हैं:-
1- हलाहल विष
2- कामधेनु गाय
3- उच्चै:श्रवा घोड़ा
4- ऐरावत हाथी
5- कौस्तुभ मणि
6- कल्पवृक्ष
7- अप्सरा रंभा
8- माता लक्ष्मी
9- वारुणी अर्थात मदिरा
10- चंद्रमा
11- पांचजन्य शंख
12- पारिजात वृक्ष
13- शारंग धनुष
14- अमृत कलश
Translation into English language
Today, the discussion of Maha Kumbh, which is going to start from 13 January 2025 in Prayagraj, located in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, is on the lips of every person living in the country and abroad. Where not only from the country but also from abroad, the lovers of God and devotees reach and take a dip at the Triveni Sangam with faith and devotion and purify their soul.
But do you know what is the biggest reason behind celebrating Maha Kumbh or Kumbh? According to religious beliefs, through the churning of the ocean, (14) fourteen gems were obtained, in which the fourteenth gem was the Amrit Kalash, which Lord Dhanvantari himself appeared carrying, for which there was a fight between the gods and demons. Jayant, the son of Devraj Indra, started running with this Kalash, after which the gods and demons also ran, while running, some drops of this nectar fell at different places in India, which are currently Prayagraj, Ujjain, Haridwar and Nashik. There is a belief that the water of the rivers becomes very pure at these places, which gives joy to the person in every way and gives solace in the streams of devotion. Since then, people come to Kumbh and Maha Kumbh and purify themselves by bathing in the holy water.
Let us know what role did Samudra Manthan play in the reasons for celebrating Kumbh.
Once upon a time, the Gods told Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma that there are innumerable gems in the ocean and if it is churned, just like we churn curd to get butter, divine and supernatural gems will also come out of this ocean. This idea of the Gods was really worth considering, so the Gods thought that this work is not so easy and it is impossible to do this work alone, so the help of the demons will also be needed in this work, thinking this, the Gods went to the demons to ask for help, the demons agreed. Thereafter, the Gods and the demons together churned the ocean. For churning the ocean, Mount Mandranchal was used as a churning rod and to rotate this churning rod, Nagraj Vasuki was used as a rope. When all the arrangements were made, Nagraj Vasuki was wrapped around Mandranchal mountain, suddenly the gods got this idea and they told their other companions, “During the churning, Nagraj Vasuki’s body will rub against Mandranchal mountain. This will surely make Vasuki angry. In this anger, he will surely bite anyone who he finds in front of him.
On hearing this from their friend, all the gods thought of finding a solution so that the work gets done and no harm is caused. After a lot of thinking, all the gods came to the conclusion that if the demons stay on the mouth of Vasuki and the gods stay on its tail, then we will be able to complete this task very easily. But now the big problem was that how to make the demons ready to hold the mouth side of Nagraj Vasuki?
Devguru Brihaspati explained to the gods, “If we talk to the demons on this matter, then they will surely force us gods to hold the mouth of Vasuki. We will have to solve this problem not by talking but by policy.”
After listening to Gurudev Brihaspati’s words, all the gods started looking at him enthusiastically. Then Devraj Indra humbly said, “Gurudev, now you only tell us a solution and get us out of this dilemma.”
Devguru Brihaspati said, O Devraj “Asuras” are very arrogant and elusive too. An arrogant person cannot use his intelligence. While taking any decision, an arrogant person does not give as much importance to its being logical as he gives to the satisfaction of his ego. So we should take advantage of this weakness of Asuras.” Pausing for a moment, Gurudev further said, “All of you run and catch Nagraj Vasuki from the mouth. Arrogant Asuras will definitely imitate us. Now our work will be done.”
The gods followed the order of Gurudev Brihaspati. Everyone went and stood towards the mouth of Vasuki Naag. When Asuras saw the gods standing towards the mouth of Nagraj Vasuki on their own, they became suspicious. He said that there must be some trick of the gods in this, otherwise these gods would not have stood at the mouth of Vasuki Nag.
The demon king suddenly came forward and said to Devraj Indra, “How did you stand at the mouth of Vasuki without talking to us? We all have to decide together that who will hold the snake king from the mouth and who from the tail?”
On this statement of the demon king, Devraj Indra said, “What is there to think about in this? We are gods. Everyone respects us, people worship us. We have a very special place in the society. How can we hold Vasuki Nag from the tail? We do not accept this at all, we are noble people, we will hold the snake king from the mouth only, you people will hold Vasuki Nag from the tail.” You people cannot refuse, whatever comes out of the churning of the ocean will be divided equally, but you people cannot compete with us.
The arrogant demon king was enraged by this answer of Devraj Indra. He spoke with pride,
“If you are proud of being a god, then we are also proud of being demons. We are in no way less than you in strength and valour. We have defeated you many times in war. We are not going to come under your pressure. We demons will stay on the mouth side of Vasuki. You will have to hold Vasuki from the tail side.”
Devraj Indra said with enthusiasm, “This is impossible. We gods will hold Vasuki from the mouth side only, you will have to hold it from the tail side. We cannot get insulted by standing on the tail side.”
The demon king spoke in an even more angry tone, “Whether you are insulted or respected, we demons are not concerned with this. If you want to churn the ocean, then you will have to listen to us. We will hold Vasuki from the mouth side, and the gods will hold it from the tail side.”
Before Devraj Indra could speak, Devguru Brihaspati intervened and said politely, “Devraj Indra, this is not the time to fight over respect or insult and humiliate someone, nor is it the time to be stubborn on any matter. If we all remain stubborn about our respect, then the Samudra Manthan will never be completed successfully. Therefore, we should do that work which is beneficial for everyone. This is the respect for all of us.” Now if the demons want to stand on the mouth of Vasuki, then what objection do you have, you stand on the tail side, first let this work be completed, then you can think about the profit and loss.
Then Devguru Brihaspati said to Asurraj, “Asurraj, we are ready to churn the Samudra by holding Vasuki from the tail side. You demons hold Vasuki from the mouth side, all of us gods have no objection to this. We gods want to complete the work successfully. Now we do not want to create any other obstacle, now all of you please hurry up so that this work of churning the ocean can be started.”
The demon king was very excited that we demons did not let the plan of the gods succeed, and made them agree to our demand. The demons happily held Vasuki from the mouth and the gods from the tail, and the churning of the ocean began. As the churning rod of Mount Mandaraachal started rotating rapidly, the body of Nagraj Vasuki started to feel pain. Angered, Nagraj started hissing and in anger he also bit many demons. Many demons fell unconscious due to the effect of the poisonous air coming out of his hissing. On the contrary, the gods were able to complete the churning of the ocean without any harm.
From this story we learn that such is the fate of an arrogant person. If the demons had not been arrogant and had thought about the whole matter judiciously, then they would not have to suffer any harm.
Yes, one more important thing remained to be added to this and It is that Mount Mandara was repeatedly slipping in the ocean, to handle which Lord Vishnu himself took the form of Kachhapa i.e. tortoise and held Mount Mandara on his back in the fierce waves of the ocean, only then the Samudra Manthan was completed.
