प्राचीन भारत की लोक कथाओं में जानवरों की कहानियाँ बहुत प्रसिद्ध हैं। ये कहानियाँ सिर्फ मनोरंजन का साधन नहीं होतीं, बल्कि जीवन के गहरे मूल्य भी सिखाती हैं। ऐसी ही एक कहानी है – “चालाक खरगोश और जंगल का शेर”, जो हमें यह सिखाती है कि मुश्किल से मुश्किल समय में भी बुद्धि, धैर्य और समझदारी से हम बड़ी से बड़ी समस्या का हल निकाल सकते हैं और उस समस्या या परेशानी से भी बड़ी आसानी से बाहर आ सकते हैं। यह कहानी विशेषकर बच्चों के लिए अत्यंत प्रेरणादायक है और उन्हें यह संदेश देती है कि छोटे होने का मतलब कमजोर होना नहीं होता।
🌲 जंगल का भय
बहुत समय पहले की बात है, एक हरा-भरा, घना और शांत जंगल था। उसमें हर प्रकार के जानवर रहते थे – हिरण, बंदर, लोमड़ी, हाथी, खरगोश, चिड़िया, और बहुत से। सभी जानवर मिल-जुलकर खुशी-खुशी रहते थे। लेकिन कुछ महीनों से जंगल में एक भय का वातावरण फैल गया था।
जंगल में एक बहुत ही ताकतवर शेर आ गया था, जिसने खुद को जंगल का राजा घोषित कर दिया था। शुरुआत में तो जानवरों को लगा कि शायद वह जंगल का ख्याल रखेगा, लेकिन जल्दी ही उन्हें यह समझ आ गया कि यह शेर अत्याचारी है।
🐾 शेर की भूख
शेर बहुत भूखा रहता था। वह हर दिन जंगल में निकलता और जो जानवर उसके सामने आता, उसे मारकर खा जाता। किसी दिन वह हिरण खा जाता, किसी दिन बंदर, तो कभी छोटी चिड़ियाँ। धीरे-धीरे जानवरों की संख्या कम होने लगी और जंगल में डर का माहौल बढ़ गया।
सभी जानवर बहुत परेशान थे। उन्होंने कई बार मिलकर सोचा कि क्या किया जाए, लेकिन किसी की हिम्मत नहीं हो रही थी कि शेर के सामने जाए। अंततः एक दिन सभी जानवरों ने मिलकर एक सभा बुलाई।
🐘 सभा में निर्णय
सभा में जंगल के सबसे वृद्ध हाथी, चालाक लोमड़ी, तेज़ उड़ने वाली चील, और नन्हा खरगोश भी मौजूद था। सभी जानवरों ने अपनी बात रखी। हाथी ने कहा, “अगर ऐसा ही चलता रहा, तो जल्द ही जंगल से सारे जानवर खत्म हो जाएंगे। हमें कुछ करना होगा।” लोमड़ी ने सुझाव दिया, “क्यों न हम शेर से बात करें और एक समझौता करें?”
कुछ जानवर डर गए, लेकिन अंततः सबने यह तय किया कि शेर से विनती की जाए कि वह खुद शिकार करने के बजाय रोज़ एक जानवर को अपने पास बुला ले और वही उसका भोजन बने। इससे बाकी जानवरों की जान बच सकेगी। यह सुझाव सुनने में डरावना था, लेकिन उस समय के हालातों में यही सबसे बेहतर लगा।
🦁 शेर से समझौता
अगले दिन जानवरों का एक दल शेर के पास पहुँचा। उन्होंने हाथ जोड़कर कहा, “हे राजा, हम आपकी ताकत और अधिकार का सम्मान करते हैं। लेकिन हम निवेदन करते हैं कि आप रोज शिकार पर न जाएं। इसके बदले, हम हर दिन एक जानवर खुद आपके पास भेज देंगे।”
शेर पहले तो गुस्से में दहाड़ा, लेकिन फिर सोचा कि अगर उसे बिना मेहनत के खाना मिलने लगे, तो इससे बढ़िया क्या होगा। वह मुस्कराया और बोला, “ठीक है! लेकिन अगर किसी दिन भोजन समय पर न आया, तो मैं पूरे जंगल को तहस-नहस कर दूँगा!”
जानवर डर के मारे काँप उठे, लेकिन समझौता हो गया। अगले दिन से जानवरों ने बारी-बारी से एक-एक जानवर शेर को भेजना शुरू कर दिया।
🐇 खरगोश की बारी
दिन बीतते गए। हर दिन एक जानवर शेर का भोजन बनता रहा। धीरे-धीरे बारी आई एक छोटे से सफेद खरगोश की। सभी जानवर सोचने लगे कि यह नन्हा सा खरगोश क्या करेगा? वह तो शेर के सामने खड़ा भी नहीं हो पाएगा। लेकिन खरगोश डरने के बजाय मुस्कराया।
उसने कहा, “मैं जाऊँगा, लेकिन अपने तरीके से।” जानवर कुछ समझ नहीं पाए, लेकिन उसे रोक भी नहीं पाए। खरगोश ने अपने मन में एक योजना बना ली थी। वह जानबूझकर देर से निकला और दोपहर को ही शेर के पास पहुँचा।
🕐 शेर का गुस्सा
शेर भोजन के इंतज़ार में बैठा हुआ था। जैसे-जैसे समय बीतता गया, उसका गुस्सा बढ़ता गया। जब दोपहर के बाद भी कोई जानवर नहीं आया, तो वह दहाड़ते हुए बोला, “क्या जानवरों ने मेरी ताकत को चुनौती देनी शुरू कर दी है? मैं सबको मार डालूँगा!”
तभी उसे दूर से खरगोश आता दिखा। छोटा सा, मासूम सा खरगोश। शेर का गुस्सा और बढ़ गया। “तुम इतने देर से क्यों आए? और वो भी अकेले? क्या तुम मुझे बेवकूफ समझते हो?” शेर गरजा।
🧠 चालाकी की शुरुआत
खरगोश शांत स्वर में बोला, “हे राजा, कृपया मेरी पूरी बात सुनिए। मैं अकेला नहीं था। हम छह खरगोश साथ आ रहे थे। लेकिन रास्ते में एक दूसरा शेर मिल गया। उसने हमें रोक लिया और कहा कि अब वह इस जंगल का राजा है।”
शेर यह सुनकर भड़क गया। “क्या? इस जंगल में और कोई शेर? मेरी जगह लेने आया है?”
खरगोश ने कहा, “जी हाँ, उसने तो मुझे यह कहकर भेजा कि जाकर अपने पुराने राजा को बता देना कि अब से मैं इस जंगल का नया शासक हूँ।”
🕳 कुएँ की योजना
शेर अब पूरी तरह गुस्से में आ गया। उसने कहा, “चलो मुझे दिखाओ उस ढोंगी शेर को!” खरगोश शेर को लेकर जंगल के बीच स्थित एक पुराने कुएँ की ओर गया। यह कुआँ बहुत गहरा था और उसमें साफ़ पानी था, जिसमें प्रतिबिंब (reflection) साफ़ दिखाई देता था।
खरगोश बोला, “राजा जी, वो शेर इसी कुएँ में रहता है। मैंने उसी में झाँककर उसे देखा था।”
शेर बिना कुछ सोचे-समझे कुएँ के पास गया और जैसे ही उसने कुएँ में झाँका, उसे अपना ही प्रतिबिंब दिखाई दिया।
🪞 मूल्यवान भ्रम
शेर समझा कि सामने कोई दूसरा शेर है, जो उसे घूर रहा है। वह दहाड़ा, लेकिन कुएँ में भी गूँजती हुई दहाड़ वापस सुनाई दी। शेर ने सोचा, “यह तो मुझसे मुकाबला करना चाहता है!” और वह गुस्से में आकर सीधा कुएँ में कूद पड़ा।
गहराई अधिक होने और तैरना न जानने के कारण शेर पानी में डूब गया। कुछ ही पलों में, जंगल का आतंक हमेशा के लिए खत्म हो गया।
🎉 जश्न का दिन
जब खरगोश वापस जंगल पहुँचा और सबको पूरी घटना बताई, तो पूरे जंगल में खुशी की लहर दौड़ गई। सभी जानवर दौड़कर आए, खरगोश को गले लगाया और कहा, “तू तो हमारा हीरो है!” उस दिन जंगल में उत्सव मनाया गया।
खरगोश को जंगल का सलाहकार घोषित किया गया, और उसकी बुद्धिमानी की मिसाल वर्षों तक दी जाती रही।

This story is about a small rabbit, who defeats the biggest lion of the jungle with his cleverness and intelligence. This story teaches children that intelligence and wisdom are more important than physical strength.
Animal stories are very famous in the folk tales of ancient India. These stories are not just a means of entertainment, but also teach the deep values of life. One such story is – “The clever rabbit and the lion of the jungle”, which teaches us that even in the most difficult times, with intelligence, patience and wisdom, we can solve the biggest problem and come out of that problem or trouble very easily. This story is very inspiring especially for children and gives them the message that being small does not mean being weak.
🌲 Fear of the jungle
Long ago, there was a lush, dense and quiet forest. All kinds of animals lived in it – deer, monkeys, foxes, elephants, rabbits, birds, and many more. All the animals lived happily together. But for some months, an atmosphere of fear had spread in the forest.
A very powerful lion had come to the forest, who had declared himself the king of the jungle. Initially, the animals thought that perhaps he would take care of the forest, but soon they realized that this lion was a tyrant.
🐾 Lion’s Hunger
The lion was very hungry. He would go out to the forest every day and kill and eat any animal that came in front of him. One day he would eat a deer, another day a monkey, and sometimes small birds. Gradually the number of animals started decreasing and an atmosphere of fear increased in the forest.
All the animals were very worried. They thought together many times what to do, but no one had the courage to face the lion. Finally one day all the animals called a meeting together.
🐘 Decision in the meeting
The oldest elephant of the forest, the clever fox, the fast flying eagle, and the little rabbit were also present in the meeting. All the animals put forward their views. The elephant said, “If this continues, soon all the animals will be finished from the forest. We have to do something.” The fox suggested, “Why don’t we talk to the lion and make a compromise?”
Some animals got scared, but finally everyone decided that the lion should be requested that instead of hunting himself, he should call one animal to him every day and that animal should become his food. This will save the lives of the other animals. This suggestion was scary to hear, but it seemed the best in the circumstances at that time.
🦁 Compromise with the lion
The next day a group of animals reached the lion. They folded their hands and said, “O king, we respect your strength and authority. But we request that you do not go hunting every day. Instead, we will send one animal to you every day.”
At first the lion roared in anger, but then he thought that if he starts getting food without working hard, then what can be better than this. He smiled and said, “Okay! But if someday the food does not come on time, then I will destroy the whole jungle!”
The animals trembled with fear, but a compromise was reached. From the next day the animals started sending one animal to the lion one by one.
🐇 Rabbit’s turn
Days passed. Every day one animal kept becoming the lion’s food. Slowly the turn came of a small white rabbit. All the animals started thinking what will this little rabbit do? He will not even be able to stand in front of the lion. But the rabbit smiled instead of getting scared.
He said, “I will go, but in my own way.” The animals could not understand anything, but could not stop him either. The rabbit had made a plan in his mind. He deliberately left late and reached the lion in the afternoon.
🕐 Lion’s Anger
The lion was waiting for food. As time passed, his anger increased. When no animal came even after noon, he roared, “Have the animals started challenging my strength? I will kill them all!”
Then he saw a rabbit coming from a distance. A small, innocent rabbit. The lion’s anger increased further. “Why did you come so late? And that too alone? Do you think I am a fool?” roared the lion.
🧠 Beginning of Cunning
The rabbit said in a calm voice, “O king, please listen to me completely. I was not alone. We six rabbits were coming together. But on the way, we met another lion. He stopped us and said that now he is the king of this jungle.”
The lion got angry after hearing this. “What? Any other lion in this jungle? Has he come to take my place?”
The rabbit said, “Yes, he sent me to tell his old king that from now on I am the new ruler of this jungle.”
🕳 The Well Plan
The lion was now completely angry. He said, “Come, show me that fake lion!” The rabbit took the lion to an old well in the middle of the jungle. This well was very deep and had clear water in it, in which the reflection was clearly visible.
The rabbit said, “O King, that lion lives in this well. I looked into it and saw him.”
The lion went to the well without thinking anything and as soon as he looked into the well, he saw his own reflection.
🪞 Valuable Illusion
The lion thought that there was another lion staring at him. He roared, but the roar echoed back in the well. The lion thought, “This one wants to fight me!” And he got angry and jumped straight into the well.
The lion drowned in the water due to the depth and not knowing how to swim. In a few moments, the terror of the jungle was over forever.
🎉 Celebration Day
When the rabbit returned to the forest and told everyone the whole incident, the entire forest was filled with joy. All the animals came running, hugged the rabbit and said, “You are our hero!” There was a celebration in the forest that day.
The rabbit was declared the advisor of the forest, and his wisdom was cited as an example for years.
📚 Moral / Moral Message
We learn this story:
- Intelligence is more important than physical strength.
- Instead of panicking in times of crisis, one should act thoughtfully.
- What is visible is not always true. If seen wisely, even confusion can be resolved.
